Over the past 30 years I have held senior positions in both the not-for-profit and in the commercial sector with a focus on campaigning, public engagement, project management and on cross-departmental coordination to strengthen the organisational capacity and to raise the public profile.
I am a strong believer in empowering people and communities to drive change and professionally I have had a strong emphasis on designing and implementing strategies based on mobilisation of the public and of local communities.
My particular expertise lies in translating organisational objectives into concrete campaign strategies and public engagement activities with a campaigning, communication and fundraising component.
Between 2000 and 2008 I had the privilege of establishing Greenpeace International’s actions department with the objective of increasing the global impact and public profile of Greenpeace campaigns. My mandate included the design and delivery of iconic non-violent direct actions as well as on and offline public engagement activities. I am a strong advocate for integrating on and offline activities to ensure they reinforce each other and allow for maximum interaction with the target audiences. This is key for ensuring an as wide as possible spread of the organisation’s message and ultimately for allowing the organization to engage with a larger part of the public.
As Founding Director of a recycling centre in my native Belgium I initiated a range of services from collecting second hand goods to repairing and selling these goods in stores and online. I’m proud to say that during my tenure we were able to offer more than 35 disadvantaged people, who had previously been outside the labour market, work experience as part of a reintegration program.
For a Dutch union “AdvakaboFNV” I had the pleasure to lead a project to grow and rejuvenate the union, which involved managing a change process to increase interaction and communication with delegates and to engage new and younger members online via social media platforms and interactive workshops.
I moved to Australia in early 2009 and took up the position of Asia Pacific Director for the security company AKE that is specialized in providing security and risk mitigation advices to media and NGOs operating in unsafe and hostile regions. Simultaneously Lena and I started our consultancy StrategyforChange.
In my free time I am experimenting with a live video streaming project to raise funds for the care and rehabilitation of injured and orphaned Australian native animals http://australianwildliferescue.org/
I have three children: my oldest son Seppe lives in Peru and works for UNICEF as communications officer and my younger daughter Kiki and son Basil are still studying in Belgium.
